Loves Park, IL. The Arlington Stallions achieved their best finish in Rugby Illinois Tier One 15-a-side Championship Play by defeating perennial powerhouse and multiple state champion Brother Rice 31-15 to earn a thrid place finish. Illinois All-State prop foward and Man-of-the-Match Spencer Krueger (Hersey HS) scored two first half tries to overcome a 5-0 Brother Rice lead that the Stallions never gave up. Said club president Vinnie LaPiana "this was an example of a team captain putting the team on his back and not allowing them to let up until the job was done. It was a great performance by an outstanding player." Additional tries were scores by centers Jon Toriumi (Baffalo Grove HS), Zach Kaminski (Prospect HS) and Alex Gountanis (Prospect HS).
Head varsity coach Paul Bergman added "in addition to what our team leaders did, we also got outstanding performances from five freshman and five sophomores. For young players to perform with such poise against an opponent like Brother Rice bodes very well for our future. Willis Goodwin (Rolling Meadows HS), Brennan Keane and Brandon Onori (Prospect HS) all played major minutes and played significant roles in this landmark win." This was the Stallions first victory against the south side school program in their ten year history.
The Stallions will now turn their attention to defending their 2014 State Championship in Rugby Illinois Olympic (seven-a-side) Style play this June and July.
